AVSECO sets up Canine Unit

With a view to countering possible future challenges, Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA), together with the Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) have established a canine unit to enhance the Airport’s overall capacities to tackle the threats of aviation security. Canines of the new unit, which is known as the AVSECO Canine Unit (ACU) will serve a dual security and ambassadorial role, with its primary focus being on the HKIA ’s landside.

With the generous support from various parties, ACU was established in January 2021 with less than half a year of preparation and representatives from AVSECO, Hong Kong Police Force, and Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department signed a tripartite cooperation protocol in July 2021 that involves sharing of knowledge, use of canine facilities, conducting joint exercises, trainings and operations; as well as establishing a joint canine breeding programme.

Currently there are 14 canines in the unit. All of them have completed their sniffer detection training and are already in place and deployed to operational duties since March 2022.

In March 2022, ACU has launched the Instagram page as a new media approach to share our captures of daily life, episodes of canine handlers and trivia of AVSECO canines and offered a more friendly way to connect the globe without boundaries.
